Burnie First settled in 1827 as a port town, Burnie soon became known as a thriving destination with the forestry and agricultural industries supplying the main sources of income. Burnie is the gateway to many other popular tourist destinations in Tasmania, they being; Cradle Mountain-Lake St Claire National Park; Strahan Village, Queenstown, and Zeehan on the West Coast and historic Stanley and Dismal Swamp in Circular Head to name a few.
Burnie stands on its own as it is steeped in history being settled in 1827 as a major port town and to this day still remains Tasmania’s largest general cargo port and Australia’s 5th largest container port.
Many of the international cruise ships stopover in Burnie during the Summer season and visit the many tourist destinations available either locally or by coach or helicopter.
